Wall-Hung Toilets: What to Know Before You Buy

Wall-hung toilets can make a bathroom feel cleaner and more spacious because the pan is raised from the floor and the cistern is concealed. The right choice depends on the wall construction, frame, flush plate and available depth.

1. Check the wall and frame requirement

A wall-hung toilet needs a suitable support frame. The frame carries the load and contains the concealed cistern, so it must be selected to suit the wall construction and installation method.

2. Allow enough installation depth

The finished wall depth is affected by the frame, cistern, pipework and any boxing or studwork. Measure the room carefully before ordering so the finished projection does not compromise circulation space.

3. Match the pan, frame and flush plate

Not every component is interchangeable. Confirm that the wall-hung pan, support frame, concealed cistern and flush plate are compatible before purchase.

4. Think about cleaning and appearance

One advantage of a wall-hung toilet is the clear floor area beneath the pan, which can make cleaning easier and gives the room a more streamlined appearance.

5. Plan servicing access

The concealed cistern still needs service access. This is normally through the flush plate opening, so the system should be installed exactly as intended by the manufacturer.

6. Consider the rest of the bathroom layout

Wall-hung toilets work especially well where you want a lighter, more contemporary look, but the final decision should also consider the basin, furniture, shower or bath and the available wall space.
