How to Choose a Shower Tray: Size, Shape and Installation

A shower tray needs to fit the room, the enclosure and the way the shower will be used. Choosing the right one is easier when you start with the space rather than the product.

1. Measure the available space carefully

Record the width and depth of the shower area and note any nearby doors, windows, radiators, furniture or sanitaryware that could affect access. If you are replacing an existing tray, do not assume the old dimensions are the best choice for the new layout.

2. Match the tray to the enclosure

The tray and enclosure need to work together. Rectangular, square, quadrant and offset-quadrant layouts all place different demands on the room. Check the enclosure opening direction and make sure there is enough clear space to enter the shower comfortably.

3. Think about access and step height

A lower-profile tray can create a cleaner, more contemporary look and may make access easier. The final installation height also depends on the floor construction, waste connection and installation method, so this should be checked before ordering.

4. Confirm the waste position

Waste position matters because it affects how easily the tray can connect to the existing drainage. Check this before choosing the final tray so that the installation can be planned properly.

5. Consider the overall bathroom layout

A tray should not be selected in isolation. Its size affects circulation space, the enclosure, nearby furniture and the visual balance of the room. In smaller bathrooms, careful planning can make a significant difference to how usable the finished space feels.

6. Check the tray with the products around it

Before ordering, confirm that the tray, enclosure, shower fittings and surrounding finishes are compatible with the intended layout. This is especially important where space is tight or where an existing bathroom is being remodelled.
